Timing tapes have a pattern similar to the one shown above at precise locations along the tape which enable you to cut a pre-determined timed length of leader tape simply by counting the number of marks. There's a specific pattern for 15 IPS and another for 7.5 IPS on the same tape. The pattern shown is a trademark of 3M and is the pattern on the two 3M timing tapes below. Paper tapes and non-timing tapes are blank. Timing tapes also have arrows printed on them showing the travel direction of the tape. This is handy in making sure you know which end of the tape is out. Auto-stop tape is clear plastic tape used by many consumer decks for optical auto stop or auto reverse functions.
